Fucking Bookstores

So I went to a few bookstores yesterday and I think I have said this before but I am very disappointed in the size of the poetry sections. I wish there was some way to influence people to increase the size of their poetry sections. So that poetry enthusiast like my friends and I can gather round and buy a book a day or a week or whatever. But every time I go there(to Barnes and noble or the local bookshop) They have only the classics and here and there some unknowns. Barnes and Nobles especially needs to give some of the unknown poets a chance. Hell indie movies and indie music are all the rage. I LOVE them both. So why not indie poets? Those poets who may not be on the biggest press companies need some recognition. Spoken Word artist need some recognition for the cd's that they produce. They have loudspeakers now it's time we turn up the volume. They are just as great. So I think something that BPB should do is make local bookstores expand their mind with indie poets. Find presses that you enjoy and tell them about it.

We need young poets to look up to. the ages 18-30. Those poets who get recognition now are worthy of it sure. But they aren't young.

  1. I've worked for Barnes and Noble for 10 years and if people don't buy the books the store doesn't stock them. Poetry is a genre that has deteriorated in sales every year. Also alot of unknowns are published as print on demand and the publishers don't print them until you buy them. It's a sad reality but a reality none the less. I'm sorry you aren't finding what you are looking for but it's the public's buying habits not the bookstore that is the problem most of the time.

  2. The truth really stings. I realize this. But it's very very frustrating when I go out looking for a book and can't find it because people don't buy poetry. I only wish to bring change to those habits. Especially in the younger generation.

  3. Good luck on that change. Not a lot of poetry readers out there these days sorry to say. I love reading new and old poetry alike. Better to hunt down a used or independent bookstore to find something interesting as far as poetry is concerned. The younger generation doesn't read much at all. I work with a lot of book lovers but outside of my coworkers most of my friends don't read a lot. Very sad.
