The Revolution Begins

Poetry has always had a strong influence on me. I started off my obsession with poetry reading the great works of Edgar Alan Poe at the age of 8. I loved the Raven and loved reading it out loud. It wasn't until middle school that I started writing seriously. I constantly wrote poems and filled up over 100 notebooks. Since then my taste has grown and there are millions of poets I adore. It is this that brings me to the point of writing this particular blog. As I said in my first few blogs I don’t think that poets/poetry get the respect it used to get back in the days of ole. It’s time for a change. So if you are a poet, I ask of you to help me make a big change in the world of poetry. Be proud of being a poet. Join me in this revolution.

Bring Poetry Back is an idea that came out of the blue. If it weren’t for my editor Sopphey Vance, I would have a hard time following through. Anyway, the idea is just as the name says…Bring Poetry Back. Lets bring poetry back into the media. Allow poetic voices to be heard. Allow them to make sales. Let’s give poetry a big boost. It seems that novelist have gotten the main rep as of late. Maybe it’s time some poets drive the bus. Through out the year we want you to write at least one poem a day. Share it with your friends and families don’t be ashamed of the poem. Prove to the media’s eyes that poets will not take the shame anymore.

Of course, writing a poem-a-day is only one of the many challenges we’re going to encourage (more details coming soon!). The revolution begins today. We’re going to try to come up with relevant, thought provoking, and encouraging prompts every day. For today, write a poem about poetry about what it means to you. The bond that every poet has with the craft is different and in my eye beautiful. Let that bond dictate a poem, write it out, and if you want, share it with the world.

Post it in the comments or post it on your blog/site and share the link in the comments.

Here is my contribution:

Words like flowers bloom

From the words that flow out my finger

Beauty begins to grow

Words like flowers bloom

Into the sky of white

On my computer screen

It is then that I

See how wonderful poetry is

How wonderful poetry makes me feel

How wonderful poetry makes others feel

Poetry has the power to tell truth

When truth can not be told

Poetry has power to protest

When protest is illegal

Poetry has always been my best friend

I can tell the blank screen exactly how I feel

And never get judged

Poetry is my mistress I caress her in

So many ways and she moans

In pleasure

Poetry will be my crutch

When I feel weak

I will take poetry to my grave

And never allow it to die

And that is what poetry means to me
