WTF! I just read a news article and i am baffled

Okay, so I was looking through articles online on the BBC website. One of the first ones I clicked on completely baffled me. I'm completely and utterly baffled by the inhuman things people do. Okay, anyway. I read this article about a 70 year old Russian man who was chained up to a tree by his daughter and son in law. He asked for food and they threw cold water on him. If not for his cries and the neighbors hearing him. He would have died chained up. God damn it. He got pneumonia and haematoma. What the fuck went through his families mind? What hell kind of person does that to their father. They say they did it to keep him from wondering the streets? But there are much better ways. Perhaps, have a neighbor watch him? or send him to a hospital where he can be taken care of. This brings me to another point. Back when poets were viewed as great and these things happen they could use their poetry to speak out about it.
