Editing Poetry

I was going to post a quote by Jack Kerouac about editing. But I couldn't find it. He said something like if you write it down and edit it then it isn't done right. As much as I respect the guy I disagree with him. But to each their own. Everybody has their own way of doing things. I personally think that sometimes old poems need to be edited. Maybe it's because I wrote some of these poems in middle and High school. Arguments would say that I should leave them because that's what they are. But the thing is I look back on them and I am very disappointed . I do a "save as" thingy and have two drafts. I don't save over the ones I have. I am curious to know what other people think about editing poems. I think there may be two different schools. Some people prefer to leave them the way it is and I guess others like to go back to them later and re write words here and there.
